You will be responsible for performing major overhaul and/or repairs on all types of machinery and mechanical equipment aboard Coast Guard vessels and stations. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties include:
Executing independent and small work crew performance of multi trade preventative maintenance and repair on small boats, along with support, of new or replacement equipment installations. Removing machinery from boats, ships, or stations, for repairs or modifications. Disassembling, repairing, testing, installing and aligning machinery replacement or reinstalling parts as necessary. Installing and repairing other types of ship machinery such as weight handling machinery, hydraulic systems and components, anchor windlasses, boat davits, cranes and other deck machinery. Performing work involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of production machinery, equipment and systems such as standard and numerically controlled machine tools, woodworking and metalworking machines used in the production of goods. Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:
1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREENOUT). 2. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. 3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). 4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading). 5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. 6. Knowledge of materials. 7. Ability to troubleshoot machinery to determine the extent of repairs required. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience):
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
